"This was our living quarters at the base in Hit (in Iraq). As you can see, it wasn't all that comfortable, especially with no A/C." James McCauley, USMC

American GI & Iraqi soldier mellow out with shisha: sweetened, flavored tobacco smoked in a hookah (at least, that's what they claim they're smoking, but those grins are pretty goofy)

THE GLAMOROUS LIFE

Soldiers from Lainey's photoblog, a gallery of her year & a half with the HHC 256 in Iraq:
"The media often portrays Iraq as being so horrible, & that couldn't be farther from the truth. Even the little things we did everyday made such a big difference. Soldiers are not robots, they are people too. They have feelings & emotions. They, too, are entitled to a little bit of fun every now & then. This website was started to show you how soldiers made the best of their time through the deployment process."

THE GLAMOROUS LIFE
From gallery of soldiers' photos from Iraq at Under Mars. Click to enlarge. Note foot atop portable heater, a trick I have been using here in the Bay Area the last week as temps have dropped into the 30s, which we consider bone-chilling.

WHILE YOU SLEPT SOUNDLY
Watching movies in Najah. Photo by Spc. Stephen LoPinto, from his gallery 13 Months in Iraq.
One of the hard things about being in the military is having no privacy. When I was in boot camp, it was 60 of us jammed together 24 / 7, for 2 months, usually being yelled at, screamed at, cussed out, or dressed down. Nights, you'd lie there listening to 60 guys mumbling in sleep, snoring, coughing, whimpering, flopping restlessly over & over.
On the final day, most of the guys caught flights for new assignments, but a few of us were staying in San Antonio. The barracks - dorms, really - where we were supposed to bunk were full, so they put us in another building that was empty. The rooms had 2 beds & 2 desks, but there were only 7 of us, so some angel put us in individual rooms. I walked into my room, closed the door, put down my duffle bag, & sat on the bed, stunned by how still & quiet everything was.

JOIN THE ARMY, TRAVEL THE WORLD, RISK YOUR LIFE, EAT DOG FOOD

Join globetrotting ass-kicker Risawn for a delicious US Army Egg Loaf & Dog Food breakfast: "Swirl the egg loaf in with the dog food & you can almost eat it. If you do eat it, you will still be eating it 3 hours later. The egg loaf consists of egg with swirled bits of potatoes which protect themselves with a layer of grease as well as some sausage. It is in a pan much like a cake & served much like cake, but believe me, it ain't no cake. They also serve waffles which have the grainy texture of cardboard. And the taste as well. If you can't stomach that, grab some cereal, & pour in some UHT Milk, the milk with the ridiculously long shelf life. When they nuke it, it takes all of the taste with it."
Or you can just do what Risawn does.
