UPDATE: The Governator comes thru!

GUESS SHE CAN CALM DOWN NOW: "I'm more worried that white people are going to start a riot when he's given clemency." Robin Toma, executive director, Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission

"Tookie Williams is a tragic example of a wasted life brought by irreversibly poor choices. His life should be remembered as a waste & not extolled in martyrdom & legend." Mychal Massie, Project 21 black leadership project

WTF Alert: "To execute one of the nation's most effective spokesmen against gang violence is to effectively condemn hundreds more poor, black youth to the same fate." Ajamu Baraka, executive director of something called U.S. Human Rights Network (ED: but not if they don't cap anyone)

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP: Campaign to End the Death Penalty will protest Tookie's 'legal lynching' outside the Justice Department in  D.C. tonight. Note to CEDP: since capital crimes are referred to in the 5th Amendment, if you want to end the death penalty, you'll have to amend the Constitution.

IF THIS DOESN'T RISE TO THE LEVEL OF SELF-PARODY, WHAT DOES? "Troy Goodwin brought his 2 children, 12-year-old Trayva & 11-year-old Tevin [?], to the prison gates on what he said was a reality-check field trip. 'I want them to see the pros & cons behind this issue up close & personal,' Goodwin said. 'The message is that no matter how good you become, they still crush you.' Protester Carolyn King was crying: 'If he doesn't rise to the level of clemency, then what does?'"

Too bad we don't have the chair in CA. Then we can say, "The Took, the Took, the Took is on fire!"

Posted by: TF6S at December 12, 2005 01:14 PM

I didn't think Arnold had it in him either! Took Took Tookie goodbye!

Posted by: beautifulatrocities [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 12, 2005 01:15 PM

I'm sending Arnold a message of support (www.govmail.ca.gov). I think he'll need it. The Left will turn this murderous thug into another of their martyrs and make Schwarzenegger into the Nazi Lord of Hell.

Sadie, just calm down & take your medicine. Go read Barbra Streisand's site till you feel centered

I'm not the sort of person who would ever stand outside the prison and cheer that someone was being executed. I think it's a horrible, but necessary thing. That being said, I've come up with a little song.

Took, Took, Tookie, goodbye!
Took, Took, Tookie, don't cry.

Posted by: Patrick at December 12, 2005 02:15 PM

good bye tookie - rot in hell.

Predictions:
* Tomorrow's SF Chronicle headline: "TERMINATED" * An op-ed bemoaning the loss of a redeemed inmate.
* A counterpoint op-ed praising the delivery of justice after the exhaustion of the appeals process.

And from Malkin's site, the actual reach of his books:
"The portrayal of Williams as some pied piper of peace for the gang community also holds very little water. A quick review of Book Scan shows the Tookie series of books have hardly been blockbusters. His top seller, "Gangs and Violence" has sold 330 books. Another book "Gangs and Wanting to Belong" sold exactly two copies."

Pathetic! I could do better than that, & I wasn't even nominated for the Nobel Prize!!!

Posted by: beautifulatrocities [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 12, 2005 03:37 PM

Tookie is making me reconsider that position

This is a smart move by the Governor, with the large Mormon youth population in LA, well let's just say it was a tinderbox.

I saw Greta Von Horseface choke up when they delivered the news that even SCOTUS didn't want to save this pile of human fecal matter.

They cut away quickly so that her makeup artist could wipe away her tears and apply visine.

To the liberals who oppose the death penalty: Tookie's execution is just an abortion, conservative style.

Posted by: Gary at December 12, 2005 07:31 PM

Hmm, haven't heard of Sean Penn hanging 'round outside the joint. Even though it's only down the road from his own house. And even though he could teach the dead man walking a thing or two about how to at least ACT remorseful. Hmm, no Susan Sarandon either.

He created a legacy of pain. He made bad choices, wrong choices. Someone has to pay for them. I say, "took too @#$%^&* long".

Posted by: Heresy at December 13, 2005 07:22 AM

I'd love to have the state be Christian and forgive the late Took-E, T-Bob, but sorry, no can do. Separation of church and state, you know.

(While I'm at it, isn't it odd that the same people who ban Christmas have "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" stickers on their bumpers? So we're not supposed to mention His Name in school, but we are supposed to run our foreign policy by his words? What am I missing?)

Posted by: EssEm at December 13, 2005 07:33 AM

Forgiveness doesn't mean you waive the punishment.

BTW, my Tookiemeter doesn't seem to be working anymore, but I guess it doesn't matter. NEXT!

Posted by: beautifulatrocities [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2005 07:57 AM

Essem,
I think what your missing is irony. "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" points out the hipocracy of following Christianity in some ways, but not others. WOuld Christ be happy with the war? It's a valid theological question, but most people dodge it.

Atrocities,
Not only that, forgiveness must mean reveling in the punishment. Glad the definition is clear for me now.
