OUR MAN IN TRIPOLI

aisaug23.jpg

those were the days: psychocutie / fashionista / trained lawyer aisha gaddafi & fellow sunni nutcase saddam hussein before the dream ended

I'm glad Bush is no longer cozying up to Mideast tyrants. For a moment, I thought his flirting with Colonel Gaddafi was just about oil. A totalitarian state with no civil rights (which famously headed the UN Commission on Human Rights), Libya remains on the US state sponsors of terror list, but the administration said it expected to establish full diplomatic relations before year's end.

In June, the under-secretary for Middle East affairs gushed about Bush's 'great esteem' for Gaddafi. BP, Occidental, & Shell are rushing to pump cheap Libyan oil & gas, which Business Week calls an oil-man's dream.

This week, Gaddafi's son Seif (the semi-normal one) predicted US/Libyan embassies will beng "in the next few days," a statement that caused coughing fits at the State Dept. (Even better: Seif is coming to America toa showing of his paintings, which a Times of London critic said "might be more at home on park railings.")

Seif said 131 political prisoners would be released in September, bizarrely to coincide with the 36th anniversary of his father's coup. (In Libya, membership in a political party constitutes treason.)

draug23.jpgSenator Richard Lugar returned from a Libyan junket mission saying Tripoli  had "adopted a definitive position on the matter" of terrorism, hopefully different from its previous definitive position. Lugar also extended Gaddafi's hope that Bush & Rice would soon visit Libya, a place probably well down their list after Mordor & the Debbie Reynolds Movie Memorabilia Museum. Libyan human rights watch:

Journalist Daif al Ghazal found murdered in June after writing articles about government corruption: "Ghazal was tortured, his fingers were cut & he was stabbed with a knife before he was shot dead." (Seif Gaddafi's guide to democracy: "It is the right of a journalist to write what he wants but it also the state's right to question journalists.")

Libyan journalist Abd al-Raziz al-Mansuri has been detained without charge since January, held incommunicado for 4 months, & somehow broke his hip by 'falling' from his cot.

Abdullah Ali al-Sanussi al-Darrat has been imprisoned without trial since 1973, longer than any journalist in the world. Many now suspect he has died or was killed in prison.

Exiled opposition groups held a London conference on the anniversary of a 1996 prison uprising in which at least 100 prisoners were killed after going on a hunger strike, & in which opponents claim 1200 political prisoners were executed & dumped in mass graves.

5 Bulgarian nurses & a Palestinian doctor face execution on trumped-up charges they infected Libyan children with HIV on orders from the Mossad. Gaddafi used their show trial to whip up public hysteria, & a kangaroo court acquitted 9 thugs security officers the nurses claimed tortured them with beatings, electric shock, & rape.

Former army colonel Fathi al-Jahmi was arrested in 2004 after calling Gaddafi a terrorist & has not been seen since. Human rights groups say dozens of Gaddafi critics, including 80 university professors, are in prison, some on death row.

Perhaps they could be represented by Gaddafi's psychocutie daughter 'Dr.' Aisha, who got canned from her job defending fellow Sunni mass-murderer Saddam Hussein. Or she could handle the appeal of homegrown US terrorist Abdurahman Alamoudi, sentenced to 23 years for his part in Gaddafi's 2003 plot to assassinate Crown Prince Abdullah.

Closer to home, she could defend her brother, soccer-wannabe Saadi, set to stand trial in November on sporting fraud charges. Or she could handle the appeal of her other brother, dissolute wastrel Hannibal, for beating his pregnant girlfriend & waving an automatic pistol at French police.

Say, you're back - and just when I needed an update on Moammar the Gadfly. Good show.

See, in the old days you would have 30 comments by now. This is what happens when you're a slacker.

I don't get paid by the comment. In fact, I don't get paid at all ;p

"Seif said, 131 political prisoners would be released in September, bizarrely to coincide with the 36th anniversary of his father's coup."

Cripes, I'm actually old enough to remember Lybia before Moammar, when the USAF had an Air Force Base there called Wheelus. Old dictator bastards like Gaddafi and Castro just don't die. When will these sons-o-bitches take dirt naps, when?

BTW, good to see you posting again, Sport. I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever come back. Hope the summer writing work went well, Jeff.

Life has been empty without you!!!

Come see my new look!

Traloo tra-lay! The prodigal has returned!

Welcome back, Jeffro.

Oh happy day! You're back! I was ready to heave a wee sigh thinking that the Girdles for Gitmo - brilliant though it is - was still your latest. I hope you are well rested and are feeling good.

We've missed you, you psychocutie!

Posted by: Beth at August 24, 2005 06:30 AM

Hey, nice to see you back, Jeff. Hope the summer went well. In retrospect, I guess it was inevitable that your return post would be all about Clan Qaddhafi.

"Psychocutie." I date psychocuties. It's practically a prerequisite. Anybody know if Aisha is... you know, taken?

And what comment thread would be complete without at least one cretinous double posting? Aargghh.

Posted by: utron at August 24, 2005 08:23 AM

Every time I see Richard Lugar I think he needs to be wearing a bib (is that drool I see escaping from the left side of his mouth?) In fact, I now think of him as "bib boy". Bib boy went to Lybia... so what?

Posted by: babs at August 24, 2005 09:34 AM

Don't you love the middle eastern chic decorating style?

Nothing says evil dictator like a puke teal blue wash over wood complimented with dirty cream fake silk cushions!

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle at August 24, 2005 10:17 AM

One quick one and it's off with the boys! Oh, all you men are so alike!

Posted by: Margi at August 25, 2005 02:46 PM

Not so. I'm unique - just like the rest of us.

So it's all about the money is it? And you call yourself a blogger.

Oh please. I'm pretty sure that site is the work of Jinnderella

Posted by: beautifulatrocities [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 31, 2005 08:16 PM

Still, a nice parody nonetheless. It's sad though because until just a moment ago I had completely forgotten about Cindy Sheephan.

Why wouldn't anybody want to visit the Debbie Reynolds Movie Memorabilia museum?

Posted by: David Cerda at September 12, 2005 08:51 AM

Within days of discovering your return from the land of the 33 1/3 virgins, you're off again--- and I thought I had a great schedule! Come back to fun Jeff!

Hi there,
with very much interest, I read your articles.
I think you are mentally disturbed und should get a treatment by an psychologist.
Ohterwise you could also get a bump in the ring.
So, catch me if you can, do you remeber Muhammad Ali ? Otherwise I would like to introduce myself to treat you heavily. You should think seriously on what you do.

Sadly, the introductory sentence in my resume cover letters used to sound very similar to this.

Oh I understand...blogging is largely thankless. Start running Blogads. That would at least be a pittance...though I speak from assurance, 'tis a pittance.

I do miss your blog quite alot though. It's nice to have me wee little head challenged from time to time.
