Anyone who would write post like this is a little bit like Hitler.

For my 15 minutes I would like to deliver one of those speeches, with the spittle flying out of my mouth where the crowd gets whipped into a frenzy.

Fun.

I think.

You know, this comparison to Hitler meme is mostly a cultural thing of Americans and Europeans (Chavez and others notwithstanding). I say this because in my experience nobody I know uses it. In a funny but quite appropriate way, one guy found someone else to personify evil as the following anecdote will show.

My sister owns a gym in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood in New York City, and she manages it in a pleasant but strict manner. She has to, otherwise, as with any club, the inmates will run the asylum. It is this strictness that seems to bother some malcontents. A few days ago I overheard a Fellow-Dominican saying “She is meaner than Bin Laden”.

That guy may be an obnoxious malcontent but as a New Yorker he knows who has done him harm and it’s not Hitler.

Posted by: John at June 1, 2005 06:35 AM

Your energy and your bright mind are only overshadowed by your obsessive-compulsiveness.
All in all, a rather un-Hiterlerian combination.
You, Jeff, are not like Hitler. Sorry.

On a more serious note (!), the ubiquity and mindlessness of Hitler-comparisons has watered down the evil of Hitler. He's the one person that almost everyone can admit is evil --although I assume that most liberals would find the word obnoxious even for him, to be consistent of course (ha!)-- but the overuse sorta takes the sting out of it all in thend. I don't know if that's a good thing or an...evil thing.

Mugabe actually said he was Hitler times ten. He was pretty hard on himself; I'm afraid he'sd himself to criticism from himself for going "beyond the pale."

Since I am a "tobacco apologist," I particularly enjoyed the smoking one. I hear Hitler wiped his ass too, does that mean I should stop?

Meanwhile, Hitler compared himself to Stalin, and felt that he suffered by the comparison. In his last days in the bunker, Hitler was convinced that he could have won if he had been as ruthless as Stalin. "In the end," he said, "what you regret most is being too kind."

I love the image of Hitler going to Hell, regretting his many kindnesses.

Lessee; Hitler - sexually ambiguous vegetarian, failed artist, coffeehouse philosopher. Likes: funny facial hair, snappy clothes, over-the-top opera. Dislikes: big business, the bourgeoise, Americans and Jews.

If Hitler exists today, he's a copy editor at the Village Voice.

"For my 15 minutes I would like to deliver one of those speeches, with the spittle flying out of my mouth . . ."

There are great Hitlerian rages in the recent German flick, "Downfall" (Untergang) about the final days in the Führerbunker. Very highly recommended.

Essem comments thst "the ubiquity and mindlessness of Hitler-comparisons has watered down the evil of Hitler."

This is especially true of Sen. Byrd's scurillous comparison of the Republicans to the Nazis during the Senate nuclear option debate, suggesting that the GOP was trying to undermine democracy through quasi-legal parliamentary maneuvers. (We now know just how ruthless Frist's fascists were, and can thank Byrd, I guess, for "saving the Republic.")

If you want to know what REAL political terror is like in the takeover of a parliamentary democracy, read "The Coming of the Third Reich" by Richard J. Evans (Penguin 2003).

Evans writes that "Even the most conservative, quasi-official reckoning put the total number of political arrests in Germany in 1933 at 100,000, and the number of deaths in custody at nearly 600. This was violence and murder on a staggering level. . . ." It was all sanctioned by Hitler with zero judicial interference (of course).

As someone else recently pointed out, political debate stops when the Hitler analogy is invoked. I am sooooo tired of this.

Posted by: macsmind at June 2, 2005 06:34 AM

That's the thing I hate about the "intellectualism" on the left, they can't deal with reality so they have to avail themselves of the argument by metaphor. God knows they are usually the ones ranting about the right-wingers being Hitlers and such, conveniently ignoring the fact that Hitler was actually a highly nationalistic left-wing socialist. They can't even get their anologies correct.

And failing that, the left then predicatably resorts to argument by fortune cookies which unfolding reality invariably proves false.

And the liberal canard about conservatives being homophobes/racists/bigots/chauvinists has also become a tiresome bit of false rhetoric. I thought these people were supposed to be highly-educated and smart. They appear to be nothing more than self-absorbed narcissists living in the futility of their own echo chambers. Utopian moonbats! So utopian-minded they are of little earthly good.

Posted by: beautifulatrocities at June 2, 2005 08:40 PM

This is the meme that feeds itself. The next wave is the non-comparison comparison, where the commentator knows that there is no comparison but can't resist alluding to one, ergo: "Now, while I personally think comparisons to our current government and Nazi Germany are absurd, offensive and based in ignorance, the growing national comfort with authoritarian and totalitarian measures cannot be ignored" - Chris Bowers at MyDD.

You must admit, however, Stalin's moustache is simply excellent in the photoshop category...think of the possibilities.

And yet, somehow, it doesnt bother me in the slightest to think that either. It does bother me that weve so watered down the qualification for " Youre a hitler" that it now has no real meaning. hitler was a very bad man. He was not the cartoon vampire that people have made him into. He was evil and we should not forget that. We should reseve calling people hitler for the very worst people and only on very special ocasions. calling your mother in law "hitler" sort of disrespects the 52 million people who died in the war that the madman started to salve his vanity.

RexCurry.net compares Francis Bellamy to Hitler
http://rexcurry.net/pledgetragedy.html

RexCurry.net compares Edward Bellamy to Hitler
http://rexcurry.net/pledgebackward.html

RexCurry.net is the site that discovered that the straight-arm salute of the monstrous National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazis) came from the USA's original pledge of allegiance in government schools (as written by Edward Bellamy's cousin and philosophical utopian cohort Francis Bellamy, both national socialists in the USA). The salute did not come from ancient Rome.
I am the author of the forthcoming book "Looking at the Backward Bellamys" and "Looking at Backward Edward, of the Bellamy writers" and "The Pledge of Allegiance and the Bellamys" at
http://rexcurry.net/book1a1contents-pledge.html

The book exposes their influence upon the socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part): 62 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 35 million dead under the People's Republic of China; 21 million dead under the National Socialist German Workers' Party.

The Pledge began with a military salute that extended outward toward the flag. The military salute became the Nazi salute.

The author of the pledge of allegiance was a self-proclaimed socialist in the nationalism movement and his (and Edward Bellamy's) dogma influenced socialists in Germany, and his pledge was the origin of their salute.

RexCurry.net also discovered that although the swastika was an ancient symbol, it was sometimes used under the Nazis to represent overlapping "S" letters for the "socialism" of the National Socialist German Workers Party. People forget that "Nazi" means "National Socialist German
Workers' Party." A mnemonic device is the ancient swastika that was used as two overlapping "S" letters for "socialism" under Nazism. I am the author of the forthcoming book "Swastika Secrets" at

Hilarious, but what's the point? That people who don't know what they are talking about should refrain from comparing individuals to the individual who was Adolf Hitler? Ya, ok .. so now what!? You don't have to have tried to murder an entire ethnic group to be a fascist. You don't have to be the leader of a nation which tried to dominate the planet through military force, to be a fascist (although if you happen to be one that is, you certainly are). Calling someone a fascist does not mean you are calling them "Adolf Hitler". It's not rocket science.

Problem with realizing we are more alike than we are different, is we then have to somehow accept we are all more like Hitler, Manson, Dahmer, etc, than we are different. It's unacceptable to our tiny minds to admit we have the potential to be the worst of mankind, yet we have no problem accepting we could be, or strive to be, no different than the best.

Stalin was miles better than Hitler. Stalin was responsible for only 20million deaths. While Hitler was responsible for 42million. Most deaths by Stalin were during a civil war and therest in other situations. Th eonly people who claim otherwise are people who have read that that rubbish Mnedveved and Conquest book, that has a crappy view. It says at the bottom of the table that calims Stalin killed 50million, that the numbers of added genocides may be the same figures. In other words he claim a person executed in the Ukrainain famione, as a death in a famine, a death in a gulag and a execution. He also counts people who were never born. For instance in the Ukraina famine the birth rate fell, he includes that as deaths. This is nonsense, as if that were true then that would mean 3.5million not a million died in the Irish famine. And would mean that more people died in world war one than is claimed. For instance all the men were at war during the conflict so that would mean as birth rates fwell hugely around 50milliondied in world war one. And the same happened in Britain, It is insane to claim Stalin killed more, by including a fall in birth rates for the Ukrainiaan famine, but not inclduing the fall ion birth rates in Ukraine during world war two, or the fall in Britain. The stats also claim 10million died in gulags. A insane claim, based on the idea that half the gulag residents died. This claim is dshonest aswell as in the Gulags were ordinary murderers, and war criminals. I do not think that people who were murderers should be included. And anyhow the US alabaman prisons should then be included in that case US "gulags" have killed thousands of people by executions, and putting people in terrible conditions, as criminals allways usually die younger the rest of the population. The gap is 10 years younger for same upbringing people in soem states. The gulag statements is wrong in entirety as it also claims all gulags were as bad as eachother. This is not true. Some gulags were attempts to re-educate, some were virtual death camps, and some were not. Under this the statement of neutral authorities is the huge number 4million died in gulags, political executions and other camps, most of which being inncocent peiople brought to theri during the famine. But to include them twice just so you can claim Hitler was a nice man, is wrong. Hitler was worse and that is that, Stalin caused 20million dead including the post war expulsions. Look at this fact Stalinj said he would kuill all people who surrendered to the nazis in World war two, A wise descion, But in the end loads who had surrendered survived theri stionts in the gulags. We may say well that was evil, but then we have to remember US killings on the Phillipines which killed a million. We have to remember the Japanese empire which killed 27million, in world war two, and remember the first world war which killed 17million. The popular claim that stalin killed more than hitler is nonsese. In truth he killed 20million via famine, and civil war , while hitler kiled 42million. On top of this Stalin ruled longer, and of those barely a million were massacres, for hitler the number is something like 12 million executed
